How to Care for Biracial Hair
What Type of Curly Are You?
As anyone with curls knows, hair care can be something of a challenge. If you are of mixed race however, it can be a challenge that leads to some seriously torturous experiences. Dying, straightening and hot combing are bad enough of standard curls but when applied to the hapless curls of a mixed child sheer havoc can be ensue.
This is my hair before I figured out what type of curls I have, and how to properly care for them.
So bad, I can't even show my face
And then One Day.....
Then something wonderful happened: I found a book that changed my life with my hair forever. "Curly Like Me" is by far the best haircare book I have ever read. Teri LaFlesh has experienced the same trials and tribulations with her hair that I have.
Hair falling out, being cut too short, improperly dyed, and in general poorly cared for. Luckily, she has an answer that really honestly works. Though my hair had grown, there came a time when it simply stopped. Since reading Ms. LaFlesh's book, it has starting growing again and looks great.
Put in the Work to get the Reward
I admit, separating your curls is a lot of work. However, as you can see from picture below, it makes a huge difference. And once you do, it will be easy to see how different your curls really are. In fact, I have "s" curls in the front and corkscrew curls to the back. Naturally.
The best tips for the short term are:
*Find out what type of curls you have
*Do NOT comb or brush dry curls!
*Be Patient. Your hair is a lot of work. That's true. But you are worth the effort.

Products I love:
Aveda Rosemary Mint works beautifully on my hair, leaving it smelling good and looking very healthy
Don't laugh, but Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle is one of our favorite shampoos. It works well and doesn't break the bank.
I would love to hear what products you have found that work best on your gorgeous curls!

I have Black and Indian hair and I've always had my hair straightened or blown out since I was born. I'm 18 now and finally want to start taking care of my hair properly, so it can properly grow and I can finally see the curls I was born with. Your story has really motivated me, together with Teri's. I absolutely aspire to have my hair looking as healthy and CURLY as yours
